Yes: failure and narcissism provide the prerequisite for our humanity and our capacity to identify ourselves as the loci of intentional agency.
Obviously, as Ray Brassier puts it, if philosophy is to regain its intellectual integrity and potency, it needs to be “more than a sop to the pathetic twinge of human self-esteem”.
